What is Chlorine Dioxide?

Chlorine Dioxide (CAs No 10049-04-4) is an approved and allowed substance for human and animal consumption according to EU, USEPA, WHO standards, and many other national drinking water regulations. Chlorine dioxide (ClO2 ) is a green-yellowish gas with a chlorine-like odor.

Chlorine dioxide is very different from elementary chlorine, both in its chemical structure and in its behavior. It’s a small, volatile, and very strong molecule. In an aqueous solution, ClO2 is a free radical. The end-products of chlorine dioxide reactions are chlorine (Cl-), chlorite (ClO2 -), and chlorate (ClO3-).

Influence of pH Value on Chlorine Dioxide Efficacy:

ClO2 is effective as a pH between 4 – 10. It does not hydrolyze in water. At the concentrations required for disinfection, Chlorine Dioxide is not corrosive.

Chlorine Dioxide as an Oxidizer

As an oxidizer Chlorine Dioxide is very selective. It has this ability due to unique one-electron exchange mechanisms. Chlorine dioxide attacks the electron-rich centers of organic molecules. One electron is transferred and Chlorine Dioxide is reduced to Chlorite (ClO2 -).

Figure 1: Chlorine Dioxide is more selective as an oxidizer than Chlorine.
While dosing the same concentrations, the residual concentration of Chlorine Dioxide is much higher with heavy pollution than the residual concentration of Chlorine.

By comparing the oxidant strength and oxidation capacity of different disinfectants, one can conclude that Chlorine Dioxide is effective at low concentrations.

What is Juno ClO2?

  • Juno ClO2 is a unique, advanced two-powder components kit that delivers 0.35% ClO2 solution in an aqueous form.
  • It is a two-component powder concept that delivers a 95% yield of ClO2 ensuring the most optimized delivery system for the generator of ClO2.
  • In Juno ClO2 generator is embedded in the two components.
  • Juno ClO2 can be dosed with a simple dosing pump and a tank without any plant modifications.

Juno ClO2 Delivery Mechanism

  • 2 years guaranteed shelf life powder form.
  • Easy to apply (standard industrial dosage equipment).
  • High solubility in water, can be applied in a very short time.
  • Kinetic time of 15 days at least for solution components.

Advantages of Juno ClO2?

Chemical

  • Powerful oxidizing agent and free radical with residual disinfection capacity.
  • 99.9% effective against all waterborne microorganisms.
  • Very short contact time (2-10 min).
  • Long residual disinfection capacity (up to 72 hrs).
  • High efficiency in the removal of iron and manganese compounds.
  • 260% more biocidal power than chlorine.
  • Effective against biofilms and all waterborne bacteria.
  • Steady bacterial efficiency within a broad pH range between 4-10.
  • No resistance building by micro-organisms.

Health and Environmental

  • Does not react with water to form hypochlorous acid (no free chlorine).
  • Unlike chlorine, Juno ClO2 does not react with ammonia, ammonium or most organic compounds.
  • No hazard to health or the environment.
  • No THM’s, HAA’s, or other toxic or carcinogenic compound formation.
  • Non-explosive

Economical

  • No reactor is required for the generation of ClO2.
  • No additional chemical is required (pH stabilizer).
  • Lower transportation costs due to the non-hazardous nature of the material.
  • Non-corrosive at user concentration level High material tolerance.
